DEIRDRE CHILDRESS HOPKINS is the Strategic Communications Manager for the $1.3 billion Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. She is responsible for public relations, internal and external communications and supports marketing, advertising and sales efforts. Deirdre serves as President Elect for thePhiladelphia Public Relations Association with her term scheduled to commence in June 2019. She has served as PPRA’s Vice President for Programs, Hall of Fame co-chair, Awards Committee co-chair and on its College Relations Committee. She is also Co-Chair of the Diversity Committee of the Public Relations Society of America, Philadelphia Chapter, and was on its 2014 gala committee

Deirdre is a former entertainment, city desk, sports and suburban editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer, where she supervised and edited award-winning reporters and freelancers. Deirdre served as the 2014 and 2015 Convention and Career Fair Program Chair for the National Association of Black Journalists, its 2009-11 Vice President-Print and she is its former National Secretary. She served on the 2016 Philadelphia Democratic National Convention’s Communications Working Group and was a member of the 2015 Communications and Marketing Committee for the World Meeting of Families and Papal Visit to Philadelphia. For several years, she has supported the media team for the Pennsylvania Conference for Women.

Born in Los Angeles, Deirdre previously worked at The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Daily News, United Press International, and the Syracuse Post-Standard. She was an intern at The Los Angeles Times. Deirdre earned a bachelor’s degree in English and Fine Arts from Colgate University, where she received a President’s Award as an outstanding graduate. She attended private and parochial schools in Burlington County, N.J. and Los Angeles. During her career, Deirdre also has studied at The Poynter Institute, the University of California at Los Angeles and at London University.
